1 on 1 Coaching

Expect improvement in all three stages of your chess game. Chess is divided into three stages: the opening, the middlegame, and the endgame. Based on the student’s interests and desired focus, each session is themed around one of these stages. Here are some concepts and ideas you might encounter during a themed lesson.

The Opening

We will cover opening theory for specific openings, focusing on the objectives each side aims to achieve. You will gain an understanding of the core ideas and concepts behind each opening, as well as the strengths of these openings at different ELO levels. For example, an opening commonly played at the novice level is unlikely to be used in top-level chess. The key to choosing an opening is to become comfortable with the typical moves and ideas it involves, which reduces the likelihood of blunders or mistakes when faced with an unexpected move or novelty from your opponent. Successfully navigating the opening phase is crucial, as the real strategic thinking begins in the middlegame.

The Middlegame

The middlegame is arguably the most complex stage of a chess game. Adhering closely to established theory, the middlegame is characterized by the presence of most pieces on the board, leading to a multitude of possibilities. This stage involves numerous pieces for both you and your opponent, exponentially expanding the potential moves and creating more intricate board states. Key concepts you will encounter during the middlegame include prophylaxis, color complexes, and pawn structures.

The Endgame

The endgame is generally easier to comprehend than the middlegame due to the reduced number of pieces on the board, which limits the available options for the best moves and plans in a given position. There are numerous endgame principles and patterns to follow that help maintain and convert an advantage into a win. While some endgame positions are drawn with perfect play, both sides must employ the correct strategy. A single inaccurate move can turn a drawn position into a loss, highlighting the importance of precision in executing your endgame plan. Key concepts you will encounter during the endgame include king activity and opposition, piece endgames, and checkmate patterns.
